The majlis is the face of the home, where guests are received and occasions are held. Yet the same mistakes keep making it less comfortable, or less impressive, than it deserves.
1. Seating without circulation
Lining every wall with sofas looks tidy but can block the path for serving coffee. Leave a clear route in, and decide where the head of the majlis sits before anything else.
2. One ceiling light for everything
A single chandelier flattens the room. A good majlis has three layers: general light, concealed light in ceilings or walls, and accent light on details. Give each layer its own switch or scene.
3. Ignoring acoustics
High ceilings and hard floors echo, making conversation hard at large gatherings. Rugs, heavy curtains and timber or fabric wall panels reduce the echo noticeably.
4. Too many materials
Marble, wood, gold, mirrors and fabric in one room confuse the eye. Choose one main material, one supporting material and one metal finish, and repeat them with balance.
5. Forgetting air conditioning
A beautiful, hot majlis won’t be used. Place AC outlets during design and hide them in gypsum or timber instead of the middle of a wall.
6. Designing for the wrong number of guests
Design for the usual gathering and plan flexible extra seating for occasions, instead of a huge majlis that feels empty most of the time.
7. Neglecting the entrance
The first impression starts at the door. A well-lit entry with a distinctive floor and a place for shoes and incense lifts the whole majlis.
In short
A successful majlis starts with how it will be used; materials and colours come after. Book a free consultation and we’ll suggest a layout that fits your space and your guests.
